Today more than ever people are becoming more aware of the harmful unwanted bacteria, viruses, mold, and other microorganism that surround us daily. Frequently touched surfaces are breeding grounds for such organisms. There are many studies that show us that door handles, light switches, counter tops, desks, key boards, phones, and hand rails have more harmful microbes than a toilet seat.  The potential for infectious disease and superbugs to spread quickly is becoming an increasing threat to society.

Scientific research and development teams are working to verify what cleaning practices and systems are effective and environmentally safe.  Cleaning is defined as “the common activity preformed to maintain a healthy safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment”. Disinfection however is a significant reduction of disease-causing microorganism like bacteria and fungi.  We now have products that not only are cleaning and disinfecting areas, but also provide protection from future microbial growths.

 Typical person-to-person transmission of these opportunistic pathogens can be reduced by:

  • Frequent hand washing
  • Proper cleaning procedure
  • Proper cleaning maintenance frequency
  • The use of an antimicrobial protection- surface protectant

Since there is more than one way of transfer, we need to have more than one way of prevention.

The Science of BactiBarrier®Protection and BactiBarrier®

2-Step Process

 First we remove and neutralize unwanted microbes by cleaning away pollutants using our EPA registered Detergent/Disinfectant cleaner. Proper application, coverage and dwell time of an antimicrobial will eliminate more than 99.9 % of the unwanted microbial growth that builds up on a hard surface.

Second, BactiBarrier® Protector, also an EPA registered product, is applied to provide a bonded, long-term antimicrobial protective barrier. The Protector works different than the first step. Its unique charged, mechanical action actually works to prevent microbial growth for months or even years on/in specific hard and soft surfaces.

This two-part cleaning and protection system is a unique combination of both innovative procedures and chemistry. The BactiBarrier® Microbial Protection System uses scientifically tested and proven chemical formulations to clean, disinfect and provide long-term protection.

Antimicrobial Agent- Antimicrobial agents are substances that kill, inactivate, control, or inhibit growth of microorganisms especially in the vegetative growth phase.

BactiBarrier® Detergent/Disinfectant

The active ingredients in BactiBarrier® Detergent/Disinfectant are cationic quaternary ammonium chlorides: Alkyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride(C12-18) and Alkyl Dimethyl Ethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride(C12-14). In addition to being an biocidal antimicrobial, they are also good cleaners with surfactant action. BactiBarrier® inactivates target organisms within 10 minutes of application. Product is partially sustainable because a majority of the molecule is a renewable carbon source and is derived from coconut oil.

BactiBarrier® Protector

The BactiBarrier® cationic biostatic Protector technology takes a totally unique approach. The 3-trihydroxysilyl propyldimethyl octadecyl ammonium chloride provides an effective initial microbial kill when applied, like the conventional methods, but once dry also provides bonded long-term antimicrobial control of growth on treated surfaces.

Protector is sustainable because it bonds to surface, does not leach and breaks down in a landfill to basically sand. (Quartz and coal)

The bonded antimicrobial Protector has a positive charge, while many microbes in nature have a negative charge. These microbes are thus electrostatically drawn to these molecular spears and subsequently have their cell membranes pierced by the long molecular chain. Research shows this “spearing”, and the charged element of the molecule, are responsible for the “killing” action of the Protector. This process has been shown in studies to reduce, if not eliminate, the possibility of an adaptive strain like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from evolving.

BactiBarrier Protector is different from many conventional technologies because:

  • Its decomposition products are no more harmful than sand
  • It controls microbial growth without the use of heavy metals, silver,

polychlorinated phenols or other leaching chemistries

  • It causes less stress on the environment by reducing laundering

requirements

  • It provides durable antimicrobial protection and is easily verifiable
  • It provides an environment that doesn’t promote the formation of

adaptive organisms

  • It provides bacterial and mold protection
  • It provides antimicrobial protection while still being safe enough to wear

Limitations of Protective Barrier Treatments

Effective cleaning requires a fundamental understanding of its principles. A buildup of pollutants on a surface can create favorable conditions for microbial reproduction. This is often referred to as a “Biofilm”. Protective treatments are most EFFECTIVE when proper cleaning procedures and frequencies are followed and biofilms are NOT allowed to form.

ACGIH Bioaerosols Assessment and Control, Section 16.3.3 states that when discussing antimicrobial agent use and application, antimicrobial agents are referred to as “bound” products when the chemical formulations bind to fibers or material surfaces. Such binding enables an antimicrobial agent to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi that come into contact with the treated material. However, a layer of dirt or debris on treated materials and surfaces may act as a barrier between a chemical agent and a microorganism and eliminate antimicrobial effectiveness. Thus, the cleanability of a treated product becomes a significant issue.

Note:

  • Effectiveness against a microorganism should not be interpreted as eliminating, controlling, minimizing or otherwise affecting a person’s health conditions which may be associated with specific organisms.
  • You can say, “The treated area or item has a BactiBarrier coating minimizing the ability for harmful microbial growth and multiplication.”

 

Dirt and debris can readily be removed from most hard, cleanable surfaces (e.g., those coated with antimicrobial coatings), thus allowing the bound antimicrobial to continue to be effective.

 

What Surfaces Can be Protected with BactiBarrier® Solutions?

 

Almost any surface can be cleaned and protected using BactiBarrier® solutions. The Detergent/Disinfectant is an excellent hard surface cleaner and disinfectant, and can be used on most hard surfaces for disinfecting; however, for cleaning carpet or other soft surfaces, we recommend a cationic prespray that is compatible with BactiBarrier® Protector. The Protector bonds permanently to most surfaces and does not leave behind any residue or change the appearance of the surface it is applied to. BactiBarrier Protector® is not recommended for glass surfaces.

  • Carpet
  • Upholstery
  • Drapes
  • Tile (vinyl, ceramic, porcelain)
  • Marble
  • Concrete
  • Painted dry wall
  • Clothes (to reduce odors)
  • Sealed wood
  • Metals
  • Plastics
  • New construction: studs, drywall, plywood, etc.

BactiBarrier® Protector is non-leaching and will not stain or discolor surfaces.

**As with all chemical solutions, we recommend testing for color fastness and safety in an inconspicuous location before applying to the entire surface.**
